PRE MILITARY:  Born and raised on a farm near New Haven, KY.  Graduated from St. Joseph Prep High School in Bardstown, KY in 1959.  Went to college 1 year in Owensboro, KY.  My cousin and I decided we would rather be jet mechanics than go to college so we joined the Air Force.

MILITARY:  Joined the Air Force in Sept. 1960 and of course had basic training at Lackland.  Decided pretty quickly it would probably be better to be back in college.  Went to Keesler after basic training and studied electronics and ground to air radio maintenance until about August 1961.  Was sent to Grand Rapids at that time and worked at the transmitter and receiver sites until the base closed.  Remember those “Dream Sheets” we filled out saying where we would like to go after school?  Well I definitely didn’t pick Grand Rapids, MN.  However I’m glad that I went there.  It was a great experience for me and a good time. (most of the time)  When the base closed I still had a year left to serve so I was sent to Okinawa for a 12 month isolated tour.  It was about as good as it gets as far as duty goes but it was isolated.  Was discharged in late August 1964.

FAMILY:  Have been married to Judy (from Bardstown, KY) for 42 years, 3 children, 2 boys and 1 girl.  Have 6 grandchildren, 4 girls and 2 boys.  We wondered for awhile if we’d live long enough to have any grandchildren and all at once we had 6 in about 5 years.

CAREER:  Went to work for Southern Bell Telephone when I was discharged.  Had many different jobs within the Bell System over the years, mostly in the maintenance area and 8 years in management.  Took retirement from BellSouth in 1998 after 33 years of service.  Quit Bell on a Friday and the following Monday went to work for a small upstart phone company.  Worked for 2 different phone companies for the next 8 years. (until 2006)  At that time I decided I’d had enough phone work (about 41 yrs.) so quit the company I was working for.  I still needed some regular income so went to a school for Home Inspectors and eventually became a licensed home inspector in the states of Kentucky and Indiana.  Just work part time on that.  I don’t really want a full time job anymore.  I never thought I’d still be working when I was as old as I am.  After last week’s stock market fiasco I’ll probably work until I die.

HOBBIES:  Don’t have a hobby per se.  I have 7 acres out in the country where I was raised and have been building a log cabin on it for years.  The cabin is in disrepair right now.  It seems all I have time to do is keep the weeds and grass cut off the property.

OTHER:  As I said above I was born and raised on a farm about 50 miles south of Louisville.  Since my discharge in 1964 I have lived in Louisville except for about 8 years that we lived just across the Ohio River in southern Indiana.  Moved there because we found a house that we really liked so decided to go for it.  We never felt like we belonged in Indiana but we did enjoy the house.  We moved back to Louisville almost 2 years ago, mainly to be closer to twin grandchildren born about that time.  We like the house we’re in now and I think I’ll live here til I can’t if you know what I mean.
